2. Parse Scan

Document Actions
This tool uploads a text file containing the output from your bubble-sheet scanner, parses it, and returns a text file containing students' responses to each question as readable letter codes.

Indicate a scanner output file containing your students' exam responses:

When you click the "Submit" button, one of three things should happen.

  1. You might get a web page full of numbers. If this happens, go to your browser's "File" menu, and "Save As...". Save the resulting file as text somewhere you can find it again, with a name that means something to you (like "Exam 1 Responses.txt"). Warning: on some but not all Windows computers, Internet Explorer seems to seems to save the text in a mangled form (missing tab characters, line breaks in the wrong place, etc.) that prevents it from working in Step 3. We strongly recommend that you try the Firefox web browser if you have this problem. Or even if you don't.
  2. You might get a file download dialog, asking you what to do with a file named "studentResponses.txt". Save it somewhere you can find it again, with a name that means something to you (like "Exam 1 Responses.txt").
  3. A table of data might pop open in an application like Excel. From that application, "Save As..." to somewhere you can find it again, with a name that means something to you (like "Exam 1 Responses.txt"). Make sure to leave the file format as "text", rather than saving it as an Excel workbook or the like. (Excel may challenge your sanity for wanting to do this, but persevere.)

This file you have just saved contains your students' responses to the questions, parsed into a readable format. It will be uploaded and used for the next step. It can also be opened in a spreadsheet application such as Microsoft Excel. (In fact, feel free to hand-edit this file using Excel before using it for the next step, if you have a need to change some specific student responses.)
